Star Citizen is a multiplayer space game still in development. It is made by Cloud Imperium Games for Windows computers. Helmed by director Chris Roberts, the game began as a crowdfunding campaign in 2012 and has since raised more than $2 million via Kickstarter. Star Citizen has faced criticism for its long development time and lack of a clear release date.

It was originally planned to launch in 2014, but the launch was delayed several times. To keep players engaged, they released different parts of the game (called “modules”) for testing. The most recent one, called Persistent Universe, was available for players to try in 2015 and is still being updated. Even after more than a decade in development, the final game still doesn’t have a confirmed release date.

  • PU – Stanton – Abandoned Colonial Outpost – AI/Location/Design – FPS Nine Tails AI Unable to exit when AI reinforced vehicle lands in Abandoned Outpost location

  • UI/Menu – Controls – Keybindings – The default preset images for keyboard and gamepad control schemes do not match the contents of the default bindings

  • PU – Location/Vehicle – When a ship is spawned in a docking port, the ship will be spawned and clipped into the docking port geometry

  • MISC Hull C – PU – Vehicle – Unable to disengage from Hull-C

  • PU – Crusader/Orison – Locations/Transportation – Turning doors may not open, preventing players from entering the shuttle

  • PU – Art – Items/Characters/Textures – Multiple clothing/armor/underwear variants losing color/using default base color

Bug fixes

  • Fixed an issue that prevented players from entering the Star Citizen universe

  • Strong winds on the planet should no longer blow ships away

  • Cargo ATC should no longer be able to detect vehicles in the loading zone or initiate cargo transfers

  • Fixed an issue that caused the character’s vision to get stuck and swing when colliding in EVA.

  • Fixed an issue that could cause server performance to experience rapid spikes in charge levels while mining

  • Fixed medical bay bed and screen obstructions in the hangar

  • Karak’s bridge should no longer cause extreme performance degradation

  • Fixed an issue resulting in lower client FPS around Hammerheads

  • Fixed an issue where ARGO RAFT could not collect refinery orders

  • Fixed an issue that resulted in the wrong model appearing when using the DNA Character Customizer

  • Fixed an issue where SDR brightness/contrast/gamma settings caused HDR quality degradation

  • AI NPCs should no longer face the wrong direction when performing tilt animations

  • AI NPCs should no longer start floating when standing within a usable area

  • Fixed an issue that resulted in the AI ​​being unable to exit reinforcement vehicles at abandoned outpost locations

  • Fixed an issue that caused unconscious AI to prevent the spawning closet door from closing inside of it, resulting in the AI ​​no longer spawning

  • Players in Anvil Pisces should no longer be pushed off the top of the ship or get stuck when using a bed

  • The camera should no longer be forced into third person after the player stands up twice from any vehicle seat

  • Fixed an issue where spawning closets would sometimes place enemy AI outside of its intended spawn point range

  • Fixed an issue that caused player legs and arms to twist in the cockpits of many ships

  • Caterpillar should no longer be short of flare and chaff countermeasures

  • ATC should no longer repeat “You may launch” and provide no additional functionality after escaping from a location

  • After restarting the game session, players should now be fully able to equip looted items

  • Recycled weapons and parts should no longer disappear from ship cargo holds after being stored

  • Ballistas should now be able to hit locked targets with missiles, instead of hitting themselves with missiles

Star Citizen combines various types of gameplay into four different modes, or modules. In the “Hangar Module,” players can explore and customize their ships, but not fly them. Arena Commander is a space combat simulator that allows players to fight each other or AI enemies. There are different game types including racing and team battles. Space Marines is a ground combat simulator where players use conventional weapons.

They can play game types like Capture Point or Melee. “Persistent Universe” combines elements from other modules into one giant multiplayer platform. Players can travel to different planets, engage in trade, bounty hunting, and explore caves. There is a legal system in place to punish players who break the rules. While the final game will have an in-game currency called UEC, the Early Access version uses a temporary currency called aUEC.

Star Citizen Development

Star Citizen is developed by Cloud Imperium Games, a company founded by Chris Roberts, creator of Wing Commander games. Development of the game began in 2010 and full production began in 2011. Initially, they used CryEngine 3 for development. The project involved multiple contractors and development companies to build prototypes and concept art.

Their intention was to get outside investment for the game, but after seeing the success of crowdfunding campaigns like the Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter, they decided to fund the game through crowdfunding. Cloud Imperium Games officially released Star Citizen in 2012 and launched a Kickstarter campaign the same year.

As development continued, they released the “Hangar Module” in 2013, allowing players to explore their ships and project’s progress. Star Citizen uses a distributed development approach, with different studios developing the game in different locations. The game has also received external investment and participation from multiple partners. Over the years, the game’s scope has grown and its release date has been pushed back multiple times, making it an ambitious but expanding development project.
