Luke Skywalker has had many lightsaber duels in Star Wars, from his early Jedi training to the end of his life. Although Luke received his father’s lightsaber in A New Hope, it wasn’t until The Empire Strikes Back that he had his first onscreen lightsaber duel. Even so, the Star Wars books and comics had begun giving Luke duels between films, and he has had countless fights in canon and the original Star Wars Expanded Universe, now called “Legends.”

The Star Wars sequel trilogy gave Luke another chance to wield a lightsaber, though presented differently from the original films. This leaves a catalog of amazing lightsaber duels to choose from, whether well-choreographed or emotionally charged fights that challenge Luke in new ways. I’ve chosen 10 lightsaber duels from various Star Wars stories that capture different points in Luke Skywalker’s journey.

Luke Vs. The Grand Inquisitor
Star Wars (2020) #6
Close
One of Luke’s most unique duels was when he faced the spirit of the Grand Inquisitor, whom Darth Vader had tasked with guarding a Jedi outpost. Despite the Inquisitor’s horrifying appearance, flames engulfing his entire body, Luke faced him head-on with a new yellow lightsaber. The Inquisitor could not break Luke’s spirit with words or actions, and Luke left him to his dark fate.

Luke Vs. The Knights Of Ren
Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren #2
In a flashback showing Ben Solo’s first meeting with the Knights of Ren, Luke faced all seven single-handedly. Whereas the Knights were brash and overconfident, Luke displayed the same stern confidence he would later employ when fighting his nephew in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Luke relied on self-defense, disarming, and waiting for the right time to strike, forcing Ren to order the Knights to retreat.

Luke Vs. Lumiya (Legends)
Star Wars (1977) #96
Close
Luke’s lightsaber duels are always more engaging when they’re personal and a significant challenge, and his fight with Lumiya is both. Although initially outmatched by Lumiya’s lightwip, Luke returned with two lightsabers and managed to outmaneuver her, shattering her mask. Sadly, it was then that Luke realized Lumiya was Shira Brie, an Imperial agent who Luke had once loved when she infiltrated the Rebellion.
PURCHASE STAR WARS #96
She may have been defeated, but Lumiya promised she would one day return and destroy Luke’s life. Several decades later, she was true to her word and converted Luke’s nephew, Jacen Solo, to the dark side as Darth Caedus. Lumiya took the blame for killing Luke’s wife, Mara Jade, to maintain Jacen’s secret, and Luke killed her in a final heated duel.

Luke Vs. Kylo Ren
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Close
Luke’s final chronological duel in Star Wars canon was on Crait at the end of The Last Jedi. While it’s admittedly debatable whether this can be called a lightsaber duel, as Luke and Kylo Ren’s blades never touched, it’s impressive how Luke managed to avoid every strike so Kylo wouldn’t realize he was a projection. The reveal of Luke’s deception is a franchise highlight, leading to his equally powerful death as he becomes one with the Force.

Luke Vs. Darth Caedus (Legends)
Star Wars: Legacy of the Force – Inferno
Close
Just as Luke dueled Kylo Ren in canon, he had an epic showdown with Darth Caedus in Legends. When Jacen Solo’s turn to the dark side became undeniable, Luke boarded his ship to rescue his son, Ben Solo, whom Jacen planned to convert. The two Skywalkers managed to overpower Caedus and escape his ship, though the duel seriously injured both opponents.

Legends’ Version Of Kylo Ren Was FAR Better Than The Star Wars Sequels
Kylo Ren is a powerful villain in Star Wars canon, but the Legends version of the character was already done better years before the sequel trilogy.

What makes this duel compelling is the falling out between two characters I read about in countless stories. When this story was released, the Star Wars Expanded Universe had been chronicling Jacen’s story for nearly 15 years, from birth to Jedi Knighthood to Sith conversion. Kylo Ren’s conflict with Luke may have been tragic in the sequel trilogy, but it can’t compare to a character whose life we witnessed up close and personal.

Luke’s Vision Of Fighting Darth Vader
The Empire Strikes Back
While Luke’s duel with Darth Vader on Cloud City is more iconic, their first onscreen lightsaber duel was a vision in the dark side cave on Dagobah. This duel feels completely different from every other due to the slowed-down footage to convey that it’s not really happening. Even so, it certainly impacted Luke when he saw his own face under Vader’s mask, foreshadowing what came later.

Luke Vs. Leia Organa
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Close
Luke may have died in The Last Jedi, but the final sequel trilogy film gave him one last onscreen duel via a flashback. Luke and Leia’s duel is incredibly impressive with its choreography, and the blue and green lightsabers cast a beautiful glow on the dark scenery. Leia’s victory shows that she did learn to wield the Force as Luke had, even if she chose not to walk the path of the Jedi.

Luke Vs. Luuke Skywalker (Legends)
Star Wars: The Last Command
Close
A Star Wars lightsaber duel that deserves far more attention is the one where Luke Skywalker fights… himself. In the final book of Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn trilogy, Luke faced off against Luuke Skywalker, a clone created by the mad Dark Jedi Joruus C’baoth. Luke fought well but could not defeat his enemies alone, so Luuke was struck down by Mara Jade, the former Emperor’s Hand, who would later become Luke’s wife.
For April Fool’s Day in 2012, Timothy Zahn published a non-canon short story called “An Apology,” which claimed that Mara Jade accidentally killed the real Luke Skywalker.

Luke Vs. Darth Vader
The Empire Strikes Back

Arguably the most iconic Star Wars moment is Darth Vader saying “I am your father,” which comes at the end of his duel with Luke. This fight is Luke’s first true test of strength as a Jedi, utilizing everything Yoda taught him but ultimately unprepared to face Darth Vader. With gorgeous lighting, nail-biting tension, and devastating consequences, Luke vs. Vader is easily one of the franchise’s best lightsaber duels.

Luke Vs. Darth Vader
Return of the Jedi
The only lightsaber duel that could top The Empire Strikes Back is Luke’s final fight with Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi. What makes the duel so fascinating is how it inverts the previous film: Luke has grown since his defeat, tries to save Vader rather than kill him, and overpowers his enemy by cutting off a hand. The end of the duel has less refined choreography but is an emotional highlight nonetheless.
However, this duel surpasses all the others because it ends with one of the greatest moments in film history. Rather than striking down his enemy, Luke wins by throwing away his lightsaber and refusing to give in to darkness, proving himself more powerful than the Sith could ever be. It inspires Darth Vader to redeem himself, making this Luke Skywalker’s best lightsaber duel in Star Wars.
