Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) follows a structured format designed to promote competitive T20 cricket between domestic teams in India.

There are 38 teams in this tournament, divided into 5 groups: Groups A, B, and C each have 8 teams, and Groups D and E have 7 teams each. Each team plays within its group in a round-robin format, meaning each team competes against all other teams in its group.

The top two teams in each group advance to the knockout stages, which include the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final where the winner will be decided. There are a total of 136 games in this tournament, providing players with opportunities to fully demonstrate their skills.
