Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) follows a structured format designed to promote competitive T20 cricket between domestic teams in India.
There are 38 teams in this tournament, divided into 5 groups: Groups A, B, and C each have 8 teams, and Groups D and E have 7 teams each. Each team plays within its group in a round-robin format, meaning each team competes against all other teams in its group.
The top two teams in each group advance to the knockout stages, which include the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final where the winner will be decided. There are a total of 136 games in this tournament, providing players with opportunities to fully demonstrate their skills.
The knockout rounds are especially exciting as they determine which teams will compete for the title. This format not only ensures fair play but also allows for the emergence of new talents in Indian cricket.
