The 2024 VES Awards Dominate

At the 35th annual VES ceremony in 2024, New Regency’s sci-fi film “The Demiurge” won five awards, including the prestigious “Best Visual Effects Animated Feature Film” award. Another standout was “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”, which followed up its success at the Annie Awards with four more awards, most notably “Best Visual Effects in an Animated Film”.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 also became the only work in the film category to win multiple awards, while Nyad won the Best Visual Effects Award. The critically acclaimed Oppenheimer won the Best Special Effects Award.

In terms of TV series, HBO’s The Last of Us led with six nominations and won four awards, demonstrating its excellence in visual effects. In addition, Disney+’s The Mandalorian and HBO’s Victory: Rise of the Lakers also won multiple awards, contributing to the diversity of the award-winning works.

There was also a special moment at the ceremony, as William Shatner received the 2024 VES Creative Excellence Award. Shatner, known for his iconic role as Captain Kirk, humorously shouted, “I fell out of a plane!” before acknowledging the skills of the visual effects artists.

Joyce Cox, a three-time VES Award winner and a prominent figure in the visual effects industry, received the Lifetime Achievement Award. In her acceptance speech, she reflected on her extraordinary journey in the field and expressed her pride in receiving this honor. The VES Awards serve as a platform that not only celebrates outstanding achievements in individual work, but also recognizes the collective talent and innovation of the visual effects community.

2024 VES Awards Organizers

The charismatic host of the 35th VES Awards in 2024 is none other than the famous comedian and Saturday Night Live (SNL) alum Jay Pharoah. Pharoah hosted the ceremony last year and he is back again this year. Bringing his comedic talents to the event, Pharoah kicked off the show with a humorous remark, saying, “It’s ironic that the strike ends right at the end of awards season.”

This witty comment not only set the tone for a celebratory night, but also signaled that the awards ceremony was taking place at a time when an industry strike was coming to an end. Pharaoh’s engaging and entertaining hosting style certainly added to the energy of the VES Awards, making the event not only a showcase for visual excellence, but also an enjoyable experience for attendees and viewers.
