The latest gameplay demo from Grinding Gear Games showcases the Witch class, a classic archetype that’s returning when Path of Exile 2 launches into Early Access later this year. During the video showcase, Path of Exile 2 game director Jonathan Rogers explains that while all classes can use minions in some way, the Witch class takes minion builds to another level.

First look at how to play as a witch in Path of Exile 2
Most action RPGs have some sort of “minion build,” a combination of skills and gear that allows the character to summon an army of dispensable followers to attack the enemy. The minions march blindly toward the nearest enemy, many of which will die, and the player summons new corpses to replace them. This is the plot we usually expect.

However, Path of Exile 2 appears to give players nearly unparalleled control over their minions, allowing them to direct their armies to move wherever they want, attack specific enemies, unlock treasure chests for them, and even cast spells and abilities unique to each minion.
In a video walkthrough, Jonathan Rogers explains, “Many minions also have command skills. I can order my sniper to fire poison gas arrows across the battlefield to cause continuous damage.” The walkthrough shows off the various minions that players can use by assigning spirits, Path of Exile 2’s new resource.
“Now I’m going to summon a Skeleton Arsonist. They can throw small fire grenades, but they also have a command skill that will explode your minions when they’re low on health.”
Path of Exile 2 also debuts the Bound Ghost gem, which lets players capture the corpses of any killed enemies and summon them as their own minions.
The walkthrough then shows off a Witch boss fight, where the previously slain elite enemy fights alongside the character’s diverse army of minions. In PoE2, many summoned minions automatically re-summon, meaning players can focus more on their abilities and the myriad new minion abilities added to their unique army.
Path of Exile 2 is scheduled to release in early access on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in late 2024.
